FAQs
What does a criminal barrister do?
A criminal barrister provides legal advice and representation for individuals and organisations accused of criminal offences. They handle all aspects of a case, from pre-trial preparation and negotiations to advocacy in court or tribunal hearings, ensuring your rights are protected and presenting the strongest possible defence.
How do I instruct a criminal barrister?
You can instruct a criminal barrister either through a solicitor or via Direct Access, which allows you to engage their services directly without a solicitor. If you choose Direct Access, our barristers will guide you through the process and handle the necessary preparation and advocacy for your case.
What types of cases do your criminal barristers handle?
Our barristers specialise in all types of criminal cases, including fraud, drug offences, violent crime, sexual offences, conspiracy charges, and firearms law. We also handle appeals and cases requiring representation at all levels of courts and tribunals.
Can I get legal aid to cover the cost of a criminal barrister?
Legal aid may be available for your case, depending on your financial situation and the seriousness of the charges. If you qualify, a solicitor can assist you in applying for legal aid. Unfortunately, legal aid is not available for Direct Access clients, but we can advise on alternative options.
How do I know if I need a barrister or a solicitor?
A solicitor handles the overall management of a case, including preliminary advice and document preparation. A barrister provides specialist advice and court advocacy. If you choose Direct Access, you can instruct a barrister directly, but for more complex cases, a solicitor and barrister may work together.
Can a solicitor instruct a barrister on my behalf?
Yes, solicitors frequently instruct barristers for their clients. If you have a solicitor, they will manage your case and liaise with the barrister to ensure a seamless approach to your defence, including preparing documents and coordinating court appearances.

Barristers’ fees are determined by several factors, including the complexity of the case, the barrister’s experience and specialism, the volume of documentation, procedural steps involved, hearing location, court or tribunal duration, and whether the case is direct access or solicitor-led.
If you contact us, we’ll provide clear quotes and guidance on anticipated fees. We can offer staged quotes or, in some cases, a global fee for the entire matter. However, as cases evolve, fees may vary based on the time required for preparation or court presentation.
